Public leaderboards that rank AI models by head-to-head comparisons have become a popular way to judge them, but experts caution that a high overall score does not mean a model is best for any particular job. A model that tops a general ranking may still trail a rival on your specific task, language or data.
Rankings compress many different abilities into one number, and that number hides the trade-offs that matter for a real use case.
What it means: treat AI leaderboards as a starting shortlist, not a verdict. The only test that counts is running two or three candidates on your own actual work and comparing the results, because the "best" model in general is often not the best for your particular need.
