Traditional industrial robots are fast, strong and kept behind barriers because contact would be dangerous. Collaborative robots, or cobots, are built to work next to people: they move more gently, sense contact and stop or yield rather than pushing through.
This lets a person and a robot share a task, the robot handling the repetitive or heavy part while the person handles judgment. The safety comes from design and sensing, not distance, which changes where and how robots can be used.
