A long standing challenge in automation is picking up a wide variety of objects, from a soft bag to a rigid box, without dropping or crushing them. Better cameras, smarter software and more adaptable grippers have improved this steadily, and in 2026 robotic arms handle a broader mix of items in sorting and packing lines.
The key advance is perception, the robot's ability to work out an object's shape and the best place to grip it. Combined with grippers that can sense pressure, machines can now manage products that once required a human hand. Fully general picking is still unsolved, but the range of items robots handle reliably keeps widening.
