Prosthetic limbs have advanced well beyond simple replacements. Powered designs with motors and sensors, some responding to the muscle signals of the wearer, allow more natural movement and grip, helping people perform everyday tasks more easily.
Better control and feedback can greatly improve independence and comfort. Advanced prosthetics are costly and need fitting and training to use well, and matching the full dexterity and sensation of a natural limb remains a goal rather than a solved problem, but steady progress in motors, sensors and control is widening what these devices can restore for their users.
