A technology called virtio-nvgpu lets virtual machines running on the KVM hypervisor use Nvidia GPUs at close to native performance. In plain terms, software running inside a virtual machine can now tap the full power of the graphics card in the host, instead of losing a large share of it to virtualization overhead.
That matters because GPUs are the scarce, expensive resource behind modern AI and graphics work, and running them efficiently in shared, virtualized environments is how cloud providers stretch limited hardware across many customers.
What it means: getting more real work out of each expensive GPU lowers the cost of the AI and rendering services built on top. Efficiency at the infrastructure layer quietly sets the price of everything above it.
